"Single-ply" is a category describing a group of roof membranes that have been used in the field for over 40 years. Some of these individual product lines are older than 30 years and are still used; some single-plys were used and are no longer in existence; others are new to the market and have yet to prove their durability.

Single ply membranes can be installed using 3 different methods: fully adhered, mechanically fastened, and ballasted. PMI Roofing and Insulation Co. will assess and determine the proper means of application for your single ply roofing installation.

Single-ply membranes consist of thermoplastics and thermosets.

Thermoplastic membranes include polyvinyl chlorides (PVC), PVC alloys or compounded thermoplastics, and thermoplastic olefin (TPO). The PVC alloys or compounded thermoplastics are copolymer alloy (CPA), ethylene interpolymer (EIP), and nitrile alloy (NBP).

Thermoset roofing membranes consist of ethylene propylene diene monomer (EPDM), cholorsulfonated polyethylene (CSPE), chloronated polyethylene (CPE), and polyisobutylene (PIB).

For existing commercial and industrial projects for re-roof or tear-off and replacement, PMI Roofing and Insulation Co. recommends the use of PVC's, CPA's and in some cases EPDM. Due to the ease of installation, durability of the products, integrity of the manufacturers, and warranties available with these products we feel they serve as the ultimate in protection for our clients.

A properly manufactured and correctly installed single ply roofing system should perform as follows::
be a successful waterproofing membrane throughout its warranty life
must be non-flammable
must comply with building codes
must be easy to work with and repair
be pliable at different temperatures (especially extreme cold)

Single-ply roof systems are used on low slope roofs (often referred to as flat roofs), and are typically found on commercial and industrial buildings. Residents with flat roofs may also consider this system as opposed to built up roofing (BUR), which can be messy and dangerous to install. Being that the single ply membranes are all available in white, they reflect the sun rather than absorbing it. This aides in lowering energy costs of cooling your building or home.

ChemGuard is the only true oil-and-grease resistant single-ply roof system on the market. The special state-of-the-art design fights hazardous chemicals and substances in order to increase the longevity of your roof. As IB states,"ChemGuard is designed to surpass ASTM standards and protect against such roofing hazards as animal fats, cooking grease, motor oil, gasoline, acid rain, and numerous other harsh chemicals and acids." It is designed to resist the build up of these substances so that it is easily cleaned and washed away.
